Probably misremembered...: Brands and Word of... →
webmsmith:
If you’ve ever searched a topic on Twitter, you know what a hashtag is. Most know it as the successor to the Internet Relay Chat’s (IRC) metadata tag that classified chats, groups, and topics through the 90’s. Back then hashtags were contained to smaller groups - mainly…

Module 8
Our group is putting together a Social Media Guide for We Live New York - an organization to help promote Young Professionals and Young Professional Organizations in New York State.
Once we give We Live New York (WLNY) their Social Media Guide, we believe that they could face three main obstacles when trying to follow it. Our solution for these challenges can be avoided if they take the following...

Murphy's Law - but for communication. →
“If communication can fail, it will.” -Osmo Wiio
This is an interesting post from 37signals founder, Jason Fried. They are the ones responsible for some of the best productivity apps you can find (really, check them out if you’re a small business).
The subject of this article can be a real eye opener because many people don’t realize how easy it is to be misunderstood....

The Power of Links and Appreciation for it
Why is linking so important when blogging? Aren’t you just sending your visitors elsewhere on the internet?
Yes.
But that’s not a bad thing. A common thing you’ll find among professional bloggers is a willingness to link to each others blogs. It’s a courtesy that benefits both parties because it will increase traffic in the long-run.
When search engines...

While you don’t need to worry about most of the stuff listed on this site, these tutorials and courses linked through the W3C will be a necessary tool for building your webpage. New Name, Same Great Taste!
Well, you can’t really taste it… but I digress.
I decided to slightly change my blog’s name and address. Instead of being Comm & Effect, this blog will now be known as Copy & Effect. Not a big change, but I believe it’s for the better because there won’t be as much confusion reading the address and it will keep the same basic meaning.
Old:

Tag Your Post Like a Pro
I’ve been adding posts pretty regularly, so when I took a step back to look at my blog, I realized that I might not be tagging each post as effectively as I should. This can be a problem because if you plug words into the tag box without a little extra thought, you’re just flooding your blog with useless words. I’m not saying that all of those words are “useless,” but...

Scientific Advertising - a copywriter's Bible?
Many claim that Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins is a must-read for anyone who wishes to write copy. While it was published in 1923, his idea of “advertising is salesmanship” (among other ideas) can still be applied to the digital world of today.
I’ll try to read it in my free time (if I ever find any) and get you a review when I finish. If you would like to check it...

Why Copywriting is so Important
I never really thought about copywriting much because I never knew what it was. Easy to confuse with Copyright, you might wonder what’s the big deal over “the use of words and ideas to promote a person, business, opinion or idea.” (Wikipedia)
The answer came for me when I was researching portfolio examples and stumbled across the portfolio of Alastaire Allday. Besides having an...

The Ever-Changing Blog
People don’t realize how important a role design has in everyday life. Someone could have some of the most interesting things to say in a blog, yet no one will read it because the design is poor. Things like typography, contrast, color, size and space all contribute to the readability of your posts.
**EDIT - I’ve probably changed the appearance of my blog more times than I can count,...

Words, words, words.
Who woulda thought that words could be so hard to master? The various combinations of nouns, verbs, prepositions, etc. are all something we were supposed to learn in grade school, right? Wrong. Rhetoric, or the *art* of effective communication, is a skill only a few will truly master.
But that shouldn’t stop everyone from learning about it. In fact, everyone should know more about...
